    Description

Colorado, like eleven other states, issued sales tax tokens during the Great Depression. These tokens were used the pay the 2% sales tax, or they were received by the buyer as change when the tax wasn't an even cent and they didn't have tokens available.
Colorado issued the tokens from 1938 to 1941, and they were demonetized March 1, 1945. They were made of aluminum at the Colorado State Penitentiary. Roughly 77 million tokens were made. The number issued, and the number redeemed and melted, are unknown. A total of four die varieties exist, which can be distinguished by the distance of the "L" in RETAIL from the outer center ring (touching, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6mm). It appears as if this token is the variety with a 0.4mm distance from the ring to the bottom of the "L".
The two sides of this token are identical, except that one side is rotated 90° with respect to the other. The token has a "cross" hole in the center. The cross is about 5mm wide and high, and the extensions of the cross are each 2mm wide and about 1-1/2mm long. Around the cross hole, there are five concentric rings. The central two of the rigs are mostly obliterated by the hole. There are two large "2" numerals by the left and right sides, and centered vertically. Above the cross and circles is "Colorado Retail", and below them is "Token Sales Tax".
This token has some scratches due to use, and it shows a little wear. The plain edge has some imperfections that were probably due to the minting process.. On one side of the token, there is a die crack that extends from the left side, through the bottom of the "2", through the middle of "Token", by the left edge of the "T" in "Token" to the lower right edge. There is also some excess metal from the "K" in "Token" to the "T" in "Tax". The token is bright, and it appears to be in very good condition. Please see the photos.
