    Description

Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd - Polar Explorer/MOH/Disc’d Mt. Sidley/Signed Slip
Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (1888-1957) - American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, the Navy Cross, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit, Congressional Gold Medal and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. Byrd claimed that his expeditions had been the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. His claim to have reached the North Pole is disputed. He is also known for discovering Mount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica, in 1934. His life was full of incredible achievements, too many to mention.
7.8“ x 1.8“ lined paper slip signed in fountain pen. Notation in another hand above the signature, “He talked to the Dexter Boys who asked for his autograph.” Vertical creases outside of, beyond the the notation, otherwise fine. Perfect for matting with a photo. See photos.
