Rare 1936 Mississippi 5 cent tax token lot of 5. Near mint. American History. Shipped with USPS First Class.
These tokens are a clear piece of American history. Set between WW1 and WW2 the story of these tokens unravels. First introduced in 1919 during the start of the Great Depression; Woodrow Wilson was working with congress to create one of the first American relief plans. After the loss of the election in 1920; President Harding came into office and disregarded the relief until his assassination. Calvin Coolidge came into office and quickly went down into history as the president who did nothing. Ironically President Roosevelt who also passed in office made these tax tokens possible. They were produced from only 1936 until 1941. Really no help with the tragedy of the depression. They were discontinued due to the start of WWII. There is so much more history behind these tokens. They are rare in that only 12 states adapted them. Mississippi being one of the states where production was limited.
