The railroad was organized in 1845 and reached Newark in 1852. The following year the name was changed to the Sandusky, Mansfield, and Newark Rail Road. The railroad became part of the B&O Road in 1869. Technically this piece is a bond, but it has traditionally been included in Ohio obsolete paper money collections. Several stamped interest payment entries appear on the note.
