    Description

    American military officer and politician (1808–1889) who, after serving as a senator and U.S. Secretary of War, was the first and only president of the Confederacy, from 1861 until its collapse at the end of the Civil War.

    AS PRESIDENT OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA, January 8, 1864, countersigned "
    J.P. Benjamin"
    as Secretary of State.  The appointment document is unaccomplished except for the date area, where "Montgomery" is crossed out and "Richmond" handwritten in its place.  The document measures approximately 17x12.  Green seal intact.
    Presented custom matted and framed.  Unexamined out of frame but small loss at center intersection, offset from seal evident just above Davis signature, toning.
