    Description

    Alger Hiss -
ALS on personal stationery, February 7, 1980 to Alvin Kentz sending his autograph.  Handwritten envelope is also included.  Hiss was a central figure of the Washington Red Scare and communist hunting in the ‘50’s. A State Department employee, he was accused of having been a member of the Communist Party by Whittaker Chamber.  When he appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee he denied the charge.  His denial might have normally been enough to end it  because of his reputation and strong ties in Washington’s political circles. But Congressman Richard Nixon pursued it and made a national name for himself by digging deeper.  Hiss went to jail for perjury and Nixon went on a year later to the U.S. Senate and then the Vice Presidency, largely on the reputation he built on the Hiss case.
