This is a group of four documents dated 1896, where Wilbur E. Wilder has signed during his stint with the Captain od the 4th Cavalry at West Point. Documents relate to 4th Cavalry activities at West Point..each is 8x10, overall fine shape. Docketed on back by future Generals Frank Ross McCoy and Edward King.He married Violet Blair Martin, of the prominent Throop-Martin family of "Willowbrook" near Auburn, New York, on April 16, 1884. They had a son, Wilber, and a daughter, Violet.In 1886 he was a key figure in negotiating the surrender of the Apache chief Geronimo.While an Army Captain, he served as park superintendent of Yellowstone National Park from March 15, 1899 - June 22, 1899.[5] He also served in Spanish-American War, Pancho Villa Expedition, World War I. At the time of his death, he was the oldest surviving graduate of the Academy. He died in Governors Island, New York but was residing in Ridgefield, Connecticut at the time.
Medal of Honor notes: Rank and organization: First Lieutenant, 4th U.S. Cavalry. Place and date: At Horseshoe Canyon, N. Mex., 23 April 1882. Entered service at: Detroit, Mich. Birth: Atlas, Mich. Date of issue: 17 August 1896.Citation: Assisted, under a heavy fire, to rescue a wounded comrade. On April 23, 1882, his patrol came under attack by a hostile band of Apache Indians at Horseshoe Canyon. When one of his comrades, Private Edward Leonard, was wounded in the fight First Lieutenant Wilber Wilder and Sergeant John Schnitzer, risked their lives under heavy enemy fire to rescue him. Both men were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions.
Major General Frank Ross McCoy (October 29, 1874 – June 4, 1954) was a United States Army officer. He served in the Philippines, during World War I, and led an American relief mission to Tokyo after the 1923 earthquake. He retired from military service in 1938. In his civilian career, he was president of the Foreign Policy Association and chairman of the Far Eastern Commission.
McCoy served on the western front in Cuba, in the Philippines, and in the Santiago campaign. In Cuba and in the Philippines, he acted as aide to General Leonard Wood and was for several years aide to President Theodore Roosevelt after his promotion to major general.
Major General Edward Leonard King (December 5, 1873 – December 27, 1933) was an American football player and coach and officer in the United States Army. He played college football as the halfback at the United States Military Academy from 1894 to 1895 and served as the head coach of the Army football team in 1903. King was a career military officer who served in the Spanish–American War and World War I. He was the Commandant of the United States Army Command and General Staff College from 1925 to 1929 and attained the rank of Major General.
