1862, Charles Dwight, Excelsior Brig.,70th N.Y., First hand account, USS Monitor

This is an original letter dated March 1862, Signal Corps ; where Charles Dwight has written a fantastic 7 page letter home to his mother his being a real Signal Officer....getting a stateroom on ship...his servant also getting a room when other officers can't....a great reference to the USS Monitor and the sinking of the Merrimack....a fantastic description of the interior of Fortress Monroe,,,signed Charly..... Letter is 6x9, seven pages overall very good condition.
Charles T. Dwight  was born May 5, 1842 attended Harvard University but left to join the army. Charles was lieutenant in the 70th regiment, taken prisoner in Libby Prison, but lived until March 9, 1884..... Enlisted on 11/1/1861 at Camp Farnum, MD as a 2nd Lieutenant.
On 11/1/1861 he was commissioned into "B" Co. NY 70th Infantry He was discharged on 6/30/1864
He was listed as: * POW (Libby's Prison) * Exchanged 9/21/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA.
William Dwight, Jr. (July 14, 1831 – April 21, 1888), was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Raised in Massachusetts, he came from a notable family of military leaders.
