The Illinois & Michigan Canal was completed in 1848. It joined the Chicago River near Chicago at Bridgeport with the Illinois River at LaSalle, a distance of 96 miles. The direct link via water between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River helped Chicago overtake St. Louis as the center of trade in the Midwest. Financially, it was a struggle to build the canal. Construction began in 1836, but a depression that lasted seven years almost led to bankruptcy for the state. Major efforts were undertaken in 1845 to ensure that the canal would be finished.
