Description
This is an original document group of five documents, dated 1797, New York....recognizance bonds signed by alderman Nicholas Bayard for various persons to appear before him and state their cases . A nice grouping, 8x12 and 8x9, folds, toning and splits, else in overall fair condition.Nicholas Bayard, son of Nicholas Bayard and Elizabeth Rynders, was bpt. November 14, 1736 in NYC. He inherited the family home, Sugar house, Coach House, Storehouse & land in New York City.
Nicholas married Catherine Livingston, daughter of Peter Van Brugh Livingston and Mary Alexander, on April 20, 1762 in NYC. Catherine Livingston was bpt. Oct 2, 1743 in NYC and died on Nov 2, 1775, leaving five young children.
Nicholas was Alderman of the Out Ward, he served the longest term being elected continuously from 1785 until 1797.
Nicholas left all his estate to Cornelius C. Roosevelt, and to his brother, Stephen N. Bayard, of Schenectady, in trust for his daughters Mary, wife of William Houston; Elizabeth, wife of John H. Mackintosh; Margaret Sarah, wife of Gerard Rutgers; Catharine, wife of Charles Johnson; and Ann Livingston, who afterwards married Nicholas S. Bayard, in 1798, and died in 1802. The great desire of the testator appears to have been to keep the property entirely out of the hands of their husbands.
